The US national security adviser Jake Sullivan had been missing since Russia bombarded Kyiv. There's a speculation that he had perished in Kyiv with other NATO members because Russia had destroyed the only underground NATO intelligence unit in Ukraine. Jake Sullivan is confirmed to be alive. Russia bombed the hotel 5 minutes after he left.
It seemed that Russia didn't want to kill him but to send a subtle warning to the US that Russia knew his location.
