My fear for Singapore has materialized.  Anti-Singapore sentiment has taken root in China and we can see this from the completion of Gwadar Port (Pakistan).    China has warned Singapore again after the opening of Gwadar port.  The first warning was to demand Singapore to stay out of South China Sea issue.  The latest warning is “Don’t think that ancient China had only 1 route!” which implies that China has created another route to ship oil and goods that will bypass Singapore port.

The oil shipment from Middle East and Africa to China will reduce time by 85% with this new route as China can ship the oil from Gwadar port to Xinjiang and vice versa.  This new route essentially bypasses the strait of Malacca and Singapore port totally.  Therefore, Singapore port handling capacity will begin to reduce further after the operation of Gwadar port.  This is the price to pay when we stand together with USA to contain China and China is containing Singapore’s growth through this vindictive move.  This is not the end but the beginning of a sinister plan to destroy Singapore because China does not regard Singapore as a friendly Chinese nation anymore.  We must give kudos to our ruling party for putting Singaporeans in this precarious predicament.  Do not expect USA to come to help Singapore as history has shown that USA will forsake its allies for its own interest.

Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained six rigs and Ohio was up by one.

Arkansas, California, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, West Virginia and Wyoming were unchanged.

Obviously the news media supported Hillary as her poll rating was higher than trump prior to the election.

However, we can see that US citizens place importance on integrity above all things from this election.  Trump definitely has more integrity than Hillary.

Her wealth buildup was questionable because she used her political position to gain wealth especially from using her Clinton’s foundation.

Her email scandal was questionable but was pardoned by FBI.  I must say FBI was too efficient in her investigation.  I wonder this efficiency is reserved for her only or it is across the board.

Her health was also questionable.

Last but not the least, Hillary has major trust issue in USA as close to 70% of US citizens don’t trust her and see her as a trustworthy person.  Thus, it is not surprising that she lost the election.

Malaysia will be getting 18 China stealth frigates to safeguard the safety of Strait of Malacca.

Stealth frigate doesn't mean invisibility but it means a small signal on radar instead of a big signal.  In a nutshell, a big ship will look like a sampan on a radar when it has a stealth feature.

This is really bad news for SG as this will mean Malaysia will have military alliance with China as its naval personnel will be trained by China.

Another bad news is the building of the HSR (high speed railway) from KL to SG will be likely built by China instead of Japan with strong support from SG.  As we can see, SG influences will be eroded slowly in Asean as the days go by and SG has succeeded in making China not to regard SG as a Chinese nation.

Therefore, 31 - 28 = 3

There is no need to minus if the date is smaller than 7.

For 2016, we need to add 5 to the number 3 = 8.  If this year is a leap year (29 feb exists), then we need to add 1 after feb, so it will be 6+3 = 9 and 5+3=8 for Jan & Feb.

For every additional year in the future (without leap year), we just increase the number by 1.  For e.g., 2017 is to add 6, 2018 is to add 7.  Once the number reaches 7, it will be reset to zero again and this cycle starts all over again.

Solution to the maths puzzle.

The puzzle is a 3x3 matrix.  The fastest way to solve this is to divide 15 by 3 = 5.  Since 5 is a common number, we can do a permutation of 15 below.

What does 2016 3rd quarter annualized GDP growth of -4.1% for Singapore mean?

Singapore had released its 3rd quarter annualized GDP growth in 2016 for Singapore which was at -4.1%.  What does this mean?  It means that Singapore GDP has been contracting at an effective rate of  0.9896% per quarter (0.9896^4 = 0.959, 0.959-1 = -4.1%) which is about 1% contraction per quarter on a compounding basis.

If we have a 1% expansion per quarter, it will mean an annualized rate of 4.1% (1.01*1.01*1.01*1.01 = 4.1% or 1.01^4 = 4.1%) on a quarterly compounding basis.  Therefore, annualized rate has a compounding element.  I hope this will clarify your understanding on annualized rate.

Synopsis of our success

The success of Singapore is due to our trading hub status which is derived from our entrepot trades and our financial hub status is ensued from our international trading.  As we trade internationally, we require more banking and financial services like loans, insurances, forex exchanges, payment cum receipt systems and so forth to support our trading activities.  Conversely, no country can be a financial hub without gargantuan trading activities.  Therefore, being a trading hub is vital to the success of Singapore and it guarantees our survival.  The prerequisite to be a trading hub is to have many FTAs so that we can achieve the efficacy of international trading better than other solitary countries.  This is the primal reason for Singapore to support RCEP(Spearheaded by China) and TPP(Spearheaded by USA).

As TPP is highly unlikely to be approved by USA since both USA presidential candidates object to the TPP proposed by Obama, Singapore can only rely on RCEP.  However, our strategic alliance with USA and anti-thesis attitude towards China do not bode well for Singapore. 

China defensive plan

China has come up with its grandeur one belt one road economic development plan for the world to counteract USA.  In a nutshell, China is linking up the world with its road and sea links.  As USA proclaimed Singapore to be its anchor in Asia, China had to obliterate Singapore economically for it to control Asean.   Sadly to say, Singapore will be the first economic casualty in this tactical gambit between the two titans.  USA is using Singapore to gain an advantage while China is skinning Singapore to gain its advantage.  The antiquated USA tactic of controlling the strait of Malacca from Singapore won’t be able to contain China anymore.

China will make Laos the land transshipment hub as the railway routes can transport goods from Europe to Asean and vice versa.  This will greatly reduce the demand for sea freights and diminish Singapore strategic port location.  Furthermore, China is helping many countries to build and manage ports that will cut down shipments to Singapore or even bypass Singapore.

China has built ports and oil cum gas pipelines in Myanmar and Pakistan so that its crude oil from Middle East can bypass strait of Malacca during war times.  Moreover, other goods can be offloaded from these ports and be transported to China via the railway.  China is also using Malaysia to reduce the economic growth of Singapore by investing in Johor and building the Malacca port.  Besides all these developments, there is also a revival discussion on the Krai canal sea lane in Thailand which will make Thailand the Panama of Asean.

Forming strategic alliance with USA has served Singapore well but time has changed.  China is doing all these to counteract USA for its own survival and the main culprit is USA that is the aggressor.  USA has shown to be a selfish nation which adopts neighbor-thy-beggar economic policy and is proven to be an unreliable and incredible ally.  History has shown that USA will sacrifice its allies for its own interest and Singapore is just a pawn to USA.  The latest examples are Saudi Arab and Taiwan.  These 2 countries have suffered economically because of USA in recent times.

Baltic Dry Index is compiled by the London-based Baltic Exchange and covers prices for transported cargo such as coal, grain and iron ore. The index is based on a daily survey of agents all over the world. Baltic Dry hit a temporary peak on May 20, 2008, when the index hit 11,793. The lowest level ever reached was on Wednesday the 10th of February 2016, when the index dropped to 290 points.

US oil rig count - 553

HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by 14 this week to 553.

A year ago, 787 rigs were active. Depressed energy prices have sharply curtailed oil and gas exploration.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday that 443 rigs sought oil and 108 explored for natural gas this week. Two were listed as miscellaneous.

Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 10 rigs, Wyoming increased by three, New Mexico was up two and Alaska and Utah added one apiece.

Louisiana declined by two rigs and Colorado was off by one.

Arkansas, California, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia were unchanged.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May at 404.

Asset and liability
China has realized its mistake to regard Singapore as a Chinese nation and the Chinese caucus has been advising the communist party not to do that recently due to anti-China remarks.  I wonder this is good or bad for SG as China will regard SG as just another sovereign without preferential treatment and SG will lose its facilitator role.

Singapore's commitment to Asean
Majority of Asean support China stance in South China Sea.  Only SG and Vietnam support USA stance in South China Sea.  How can there be unity in Asean with 2 Asean countries go against China among its 10 members?  One cannot just keep preaching unity without practising it.

Relations with major powers
If SG didn't side with USA, China diplomat won't demand SG to stay out of South China Sea in August 2016.  This is the first time that China used such harsh attitude towards SG.  Relationship with China has definitely gone south recently.

Different world views
Everyone wants a rule-based world but this rule-based standard must be applied universally.  In other words, no country can impose its will on others by might which is an ideology that we all strive to achieve.  This rule-based standard cannot be selectively applied.  For example, only certain countries can use might to rule this world but others cannot.  Who attacked Iraq without UN mandate with fabricated intelligence that Iraq possessed WMD? Who went around setting military bases in the world?  How come USA can meddle in South China Sea when it is a non-claimant? The reason is simple: USA has the might to do it!

We support all states to follow UN convention on the law of the sea but this convention can only be interpreted and served by a true and legal court.  ICJ is the only true and legal international court but not PCA.  One cannot enforce PCA ruling on one country but oppose PCA ruling on another country.  Therefore, we cannot ask China to adhere to PCA ruling but allow Australia to reject PCA ruling.  Philippines filed the case in PCA but not ICJ under the instruction of USA.  Why PCA but not ICJ?  This is because ICJ will throw out this case as it contravenes the ICJ jurisdiction.
